Oil Pulling – Ancient Wisdom for Modern Health
(Kavala & Gandusha in Ayurveda)
Oil pulling is one of Ayurveda’s most time-honored daily practices. Known traditionally as Kavala and Gandusha, this ritual offers profound cleansing and rejuvenating effects for oral and overall health. Though often used interchangeably, these two practices have distinct methods and purposes in classical Ayurvedic texts.
Two Methods, Two Purposes
???? Gandusha – Fill the mouth completely with oil and hold it still without swishing until tears, mucus, or saliva begin to release.
???? Kavala – Use a smaller amount of oil, gently swish it around the mouth for several minutes, and then spit it out.
When & How to Practice
Perform daily in the morning on an empty stomach.
Begin with 5 minutes, gradually increasing to 10–20 minutes.
Use warm sesame oil for regular practice – it is deeply cleansing, strengthening, and balances Vata dosha.
For specific imbalances, medicated oils or other liquids like ghee or milk can be used.
